This classic white swan lives on the shores of Lake Balaton. During the 1960s and 1970s, Balaton became a major tourist destination for ordinary working Hungarians and especially for subsidised holiday excursions for union members. It also attracted many East Germans and other residents of the Eastern Bloc. West Germans could also visit, making Balaton a common meeting place for families and friends separated by the Berlin Wall.
These two photographs were taken by Greta during a visit to Lake Balaton where she spent six months living in Budapest. She describes the lake as having a vibe similar to the BBC television series Hi-di-hi. "Whilst the white swans were beautiful gliding around the milky fresh water, on the banks they often lounged around like hippos - what we called the 'pregnant' men of Balaton: too much beer and langos!"
